Have a great discussion! ANSWER In my opinion, formal and informal English can be distinguished mainly by the situation, the relationship between the speakers, and the choice of words. Formal English is normally used in academic writing, official letters, job applications, business communication, meetings, or when we communicate with someone we do not know well. The language tends to be more structured, polite, and careful. On the other hand, informal English is more common when we talk to friends, family members, or people with whom we already have a close relationship. It often uses contractions, simple vocabulary, and everyday expressions.
